In preparation for the General Election tomorrow, we learned how a General Election is conducted, by holding a mock election for our constituency- Galway West. We learned that 5 of the 157 TD's who will make up the next Dáil will be elected from our constituency. We set up a polling station in our classroom and after collecting our ballot papers we voted secretly. The children helping in the count centre had a long and complicated task. Firstly, the spoilt votes had to be removed leaving a total valid poll of 22. We calculated our quota for election which was 5 votes. Two candidates reached the quota after the first count. In subsequent counts their surplus votes were transferred and some candidates were eliminated. After a long process, we eventually elected our five candidates. We will have to wait until the weekend to see if our vote was representative of the general constituency.
