Biodegradable Plant Pots in Room 13Here in 5th class we were 'doing our bit' for the environment over the last few weeks. We decided to carry out a science experiment on the biodegradability of paper - with a slight twist! We made plant pots using only newspaper, our drinks bottles, a pencil, ruler and scissors. Firstly we had to measure 8 strips of paper - each measuring 10 cm in width. Then, using our drinks bottles as a mould, we wrapped them around one by one and folded the base at the bottom.
We then filled the pots about 2/3 of the way with compost before putting our 'Nastursium' seeds into it and covering them. Each of us took one home and planted it that evening - with 2 extra which we planted in the school garden. We are now monitoring our plant pots to see how long it takes for the newspaper pot to decompose - we have made some predictions but we will have to wait and see if they are right!
