Last week we celebrated Engineering Week 2020! We learned all about the various different types of engineering, from mechanical and biomedical to sound and aeronautical.
We also were lucky enough to have 3 guest speakers come into us to talk about their lines of work. On Thursday Sarah and Lizanne came in to talk to us about Biomedical Engineering. They set us a challenge whereby we had to make a table using newspaper, which was strong enough to hold a heavy book (easier said than done we can assure you!) On Friday Culann McCabe came in to tell us all about Sound Engineering. He showed us a really cool computer programme which he uses and some of us got to have a go at it!
We also took part in a few engineering challenges of our own - at the beginning of the week we created "Spaghetti towers" and "Spaghetti 3D Shapes" and on Friday afternoon, we put all our newfound skills and knowledge to the test in our "Newspaper Construction Challenge". For this 2 of our groups were asked to design and build a tall tower using only Newspaper and masking tape while the other 2 groups were asked to design and create a cage that 2 people could fit into! We learned a lot about the importance of planning & teamwork when it comes to engineering!! Take a look at some of the photos from the week!
