Happy Hallowe'en from Third Class

26/10/2014

We've recently read about spiders so we decided to make spider cookies for our Junior Infant reading buddies.  They were so tasty that we couldn't resist making some for ourselves!

We delivered the goodies and helped our buddies dress up for Hallowe'en.

We made Hallowe'en skeletons this week too, after reading and researching some information about the bones in our own skeletons.

We played 'biting the apple' game we had read about in our Gaeilge and had lots of fun ducking for Hallowe'en treats in flour and water.

Elena wins News2Day Competition!!

13/10/2014

Our class love watching News2Day. We get to hear about all the big news & sports stories from around the world and it also tells us what the weather is going to be like! They also have some really interesting pieces for children and some great competitions too!
The most recent competition was titled 'Autumn Favourites' which asked us to write a piece on what we love best about the season of Autumn. The fab prize was the opportunity to present the News2Day weather on our own!
All the class worked really hard in writing excellent pieces and we sent them off last week. We were so happy when we tuned in to News2Day to find out that Elena had won the great prize! Here is Elena's piece below.

A few things I like about Autumn is wrapping up warm and wearing my favourite jumper. I also like seeing my frogs and other animals getting ready to hibernate. I also like getting off school but then again I miss my friends and my art in school. But what I really miss most is my best friend! I like when the flowers close up and go to sleep. One of my favourite parts is Halloween! We go knocking on peoples doors and get sweets and yummy hot chocolate - Mmmmm! Just think about it! Plus I get to watch more TV than usual - Yipee! I like seeing the beautiful, colourful leaves waiting for summer and spring to come but they will! It's like we never know what Autumn can really be!

Elena will be reading the News2Day weather this Thursday on RTE 2 at 4.25 pm. Here is the link to the announcement of Elena winning!
 (Go to 6:30 mins.)

Below are some of our other great entries.

Autumn is good because of the birds and trees. Falling everywhere are colourful leaves - red, orange, yellow and brown. This is the best part of Autumn. Also I love the conkers, beech nuts and animals. Hedgehogs, squirrels, snails and slugs are hibernating. Sparrows and other birds are migrating. Flowers go to sleep and the fallen leaves start to crunch. Colourful leaves everywhere!! The dew and the frost starts to come in Autumn. Autumn is beautiful!! It's getting near winter so you can put on your hat, gloves and scarf. Sometimes I like putting bread out for the birds and maybe seeds as well before they fly away. Also I like Autumn because it is my birthday in September. Autumn is the best time of year!!

Meera

I like Autumn because I get to come back to school to meet all my friends. Sometimes I watch hedgehogs in my front garden. I like October because its my birthday and I get lots of presents! The flowers and plants in our garden go to sleep in the Autumn until Spring. Sometimes I like putting bread out for the birds before they go. Me and my friends go trick or treating on halloween night. I like going and collecting conkers I find on the ground. I find beech nuts everywhere! I like Autumn because I get to go to school everyday. I like Autumn because all the leaves turn red, orange, yellow and brown and fall off all the trees. I like Autumn because its my baby cousins birthday.

Stephen

My favourite thing about Autumn is that most of my hobbies are in Autumn. My favourite hobby is seeing what the weather is like around Ireland. I also like rugby and rescuing animals. My birthday is on October 12th too! I love getting up out of bed and it's dark outside. I love watching the birds migrate to warmer countries. I try draw them while they fly past. I like sitting in my garden and watch the farmers across the river harvesting the crops. I love getting into bed with the electric blanket on. I like collecting leaves and making a huge pile out of them. Then I jump in them and relax!

Mark

I love Autumn because the leaves fall off the trees and it looks so nice! Halloween is very fun because you get free candy! I get to see my Granny and Grandad and we get to play conkers all day long. On my sisters birthday and she is really nice. The days get shorter and I get to watch News2day without going to school!

Daniel

I like when all the leaves fall. My sisters birthday is in Autumn. The animals hibernate and sleep then the food is hot cocoa. Then we get corn from the farmer and all the crispy mornings. Then there is long evenings and we go back to school!

Mohammed

I love Autumn because I like when the leaves aren't green and I like Halloween - the different clothes and food and drinks. I like going back to school because I love doing Autumn art and Autumn poems and get to see my friends.
I like when the leaves and the chestnuts fall down. I like jumping in the leaves like a crazy person and playing with my sister with leaves and having a nature walk. I love Halloween when we go trick-or-treating and dressing up. When you go to a Halloween party it is fun playing games like Bob the Apple. I think it is more fun trick or treating with your friends.

Aoibhe

I love Autumn because we can drink hot chocolate and Halloween we can dress up. I love getting up and the crispy leaves are in the garden and the frosty weather and the birds tweeting and the conkers on the ground. It gets darker earlier and the animals love hibernating. We sometimes go swimming in a pool and the cinema in Autumn and we are getting ready for winter, The days are shorter and the nights are longer and be careful - leaves could fall on you. I love Autumn!

Ailbhe

Autumn is awesome. Look at all these great things you can do. etting ready for all the animals to hibernate. Leaves changing the flowers go to sleep. Halloween is coming. You wear hotter clothes like scarves hats and jackets. There are crisp mornings. Crops longer evenings going back to school after Halloween and seeing my friends. Watching scary movies. There are more chestnuts, sycamore ash conkers and jumping in the leaves.

Jamie Greaney 3rd Class

I like Autumn because my birthday is in Autumn! I like Autumn because the weather is not too hot (I hat too hot!). I love when I step in the dry leaves and I like the colours of the leaves as well. I like when there is longer evenings and when I see all of the sparrows flying away to hotter countries. All the bears, foxes, frogs, snails, squirrells, hedgehogs (some bats and maybe rabbits or hares) hibernate. I like it when the conkers and helicopters (on sycamore trees) and beech nuts fall. I like picking hazelnuts at my friends house. I like wearing warm clothes like jeans, jumpers, scarves, hats, leggings, tracksuits, gloves, long sleeve t-shirts, warm dresses and warm jackets. I love hearing and seeing the robins. Most flowers go to sleep and open again in the spring.

Local Trail explored by 5th Class - Room 13

We took advantage of the beautiful Autumnal weather we've been having and, on Thursday last, set off on a little "ramble in the bramble" to quote Mr Carney! We have such a wealth of History and nature in our local natural and built environment and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring some aspects as follows: we took time to do a traffic survey  on the busy N59 before turning off for Dangan and studying some of the trees that are growing in abundance along the way. We stopped to look and listen for signs of life along the River Corrib, taking in Menlo Castle across the water and the Tea House Folly as well. We really enjoyed our trail and some of us didn't need a lunch afterwards as so many blackberries were consumed :-)
