Autumn has arrived in Room 8

30/9/2016

This week in art we created an Autumn display of animals that hibernate for the winter such as the squirrel and the hedgehog. Did you know that some species of butterfly hibernate as adult butterflies, including the Brimstone, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Red Admiral, while other species survive the winter as eggs, caterpillars or chrysalis? We used various materials to create the animals such as leaves, matchsticks and feathers and we really enjoyed making them.

Working with clay in Room 7!

Over the last fortnight, we have been getting our hands dirty here in Room 7!

During our first week of clay, we looked at the various techniques we can use when working with clay - rolling, moulding, patting, adding, squeezing, smoothing and scuplting. We made various objects from things that could stand by themselves, to something that could hold water, to a mini figurine.

During week 2 we made our Autumn Hedgehogs! We used all the techniques we practiced in week one and then used googly eyes and match sticks to bring our little friends to life!

We are studying China in History and Geography at the moment. We have also been busy getting creative with Chinese inspired art work! We practised the skill of marbling whilst making our lanterns which we decorated to our own personal taste with crepe paper and jewels! We also drew and coloured our very own dragon heads. We folded coloured paper to create an accordion effect for the body. Once again we decorated with ribbon and jewels to our own personal taste! We had great fun celebrating China in art this month!

6th Class have recently been studying about Georgian architecture in History class. They each chose a building that they really admired and studied them in detail. They presented their projects to the class and shared some interesting facts with us about the many buildings and their pasts. They represented their findings in a very artistic and creative way! Well done to all!

Some of our September activities in 2nd Class Room 7!

Over the past few weeks, we have been very busy here in Room 7!
In art, we used 'Line' and 'Form' as techniques to create our 'Selfie Portraits'. We also used finger printing to create our 'Autumn Trees'.

In Drama, we used the story of 'Oisín in Tír na nÓg' as our inspiration. In our groups we used mime, still imaging and thought tracking to act out various parts of the story. We then created 'Conscience Alley' by joining our hands in pairs to make a long arch. We 'created' his conscience by whispering the various thoughts that were going through his mind. One by one we walked through the arch, listening to the whispers and imagining what it would have been like to be Oisín as he was trying to decide whether to stay in Tír na nÓg or to return to Ireland.

In History, we learned all about the Vikings - where they came from, how they lived and what language they used. We then wrote our own names in 'Futhark' which was their alphabet.
