We were very lucky to have the use of Legoeducation an app on our i pads.
We had great fun constructing lots of different models that had various functions.

It was a beautiful Spring morning for our walking bus. We had a great morning walking to school. Bus 1: Left the church at 8:30 am and Bus 2: left The Bailey at 8:35 am. We really enjoyed getting exercise before school and we were helping the environment too. Ms. Lillis's class won the Golden boot this week as they had the most amount of people walking to school. Thank you to all the parents who helped get the walking bus moving again. Hopefully the weather stays dry for our walking bus next week.
We are hosting our School Museum in the school Foyer for the last week and it will run until the end of next week (Friday 5th April). We have received lots of very interesting artefacts spanning a large period of History. Below are some examples of the items on display. Please feel free to come in and take a look for yourself. Thanks to all those who made our museum possible by donating their treasured artefacts for display. As part of engineers week we took on the task of building bridges with paper. We had to test the strength of bridges by checking how many cubes they could hold. We also make a short and long helicopter from paper and tested their flying ability both inside and outside. On Monday, March 25th, both 5th classes were invited to N.U.I.G to visit the Italian department after our six weeks of lessons. After walking to the campus we took part in a quiz to test our knowledge of the Italian language after our lessons. We were then presented with certificates by the Italian lecturers and finally we enjoyed some pizza compliments of N.U.I.G. We really enjoyed our morning and are very grateful to N.U.I.G and our Italian teachers. Here are some pictures of us with our certificates and pizza: Climate change and the carbon cycle.
We are learning about climate change and the carbon cycle. Climate change can cause a big effect in millions of peoples lives especially the poorest. We learned about the greenhouse effect which is a big problem. The greenhouse effect is when gas levels get too high because of human activities, trapping too much of the suns energy, as heat upsets the natural systems that regulate our climate. Things keep getting hotter and hotter and we start seeing more and more extreme weather and other impacts. The carbon cycle shows us how fossil fuels are burnt in a factory, then put in the air which causes carbon dioxide. Fossil fuel power plants burn carbon fuels such as coal, oil or gas to generate steam that drives large turbines that produce electricity. However, by burning carbon fuels they produce large amounts of carbon dioxide which causes climate change. Things we can do to prevent climate change are to turn off the lights when not needed, unplug computers, TV's and other electronics when not needed. We also learned that we could eat meat-free meals, grow our own vegetables and fruits and most importantly not waste food. We all found it interesting learning about climate change with Caitríona Cunningham from An Táisce and hopefully we'll be doing these simple things around our home to help keep our planet safe. We have recently commenced our Incredible Edibles programme. This is a fun initiative that allows us to be healthier individuals and guides us through what's involved in making and growing food. To date we have completed three tasks. We have learned about food origin( where food comes from), identified Irish food products and finally the planting element. We have planted chives, turnips, spinach, potatoes, strawberries, lettuce and carrots. All of these are steadily growing and we hope to plant them in the coming weeks.
Room 14 We recently had a very informative chat from a Green Schools representative. During this workshop, we did mini tasks which showed us different ways of Living Healthy and "Going Green." Healthy Food, Healthy Body, Healthy Mind and Healthy Environment were the key themes we focused on.
Healthy Foods- We tried to identify the names of fruit and vegetables. Healthy Body- The different functions of body parts. Healthy Mind- What we do to have a clear mind and deal with stress. Healthy Environment- How we can continue to take care of the world around us. These were awesome tasks! lighthouse projects 4th class R16We are very proud of our lighthouses that we constructed.Well done everyone!
Beebots in 4th class R16We were given the chance to work with beebots. We had great fun trying to figure out how to make them move and to move in the correct direction!
3-D Shapes 4th class R16We have been learning about 3-D Shapes in Maths. We constructed our own models using match sticks and blu tac.We had great fun.
We were very lucky to have Eileen Grant come into our class and talk about climate change.
We had lots of fun experimenting with our magnets. We tested lots of objects like keys, coins, cans and paper clips. Some items were attracted to the magnets but some did not attract. It was lots of fun seeing the objects being pulled towards the magnets.
We looked at magnets and magnetism in our classroom this week. We learned about metals, iron, nickel and steel and how different objects contain these. We tested a number of objects to discover if they contained iron, nickel or steel with the magnets. We then worked in our groups with the magnets. We discovered the poles (north and south ) on the magnets either repel or attract each other...the saying goes ' opposites attract'! Bhí ceolchoirm sa scoil inniu le haghaidh Seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhíomar ag canadh, ag damsha agus ag rá dánta as gaeilge. Bhain gach duine an taitneamh as. We learned how to make delicious pancakes in school and got to help make the pancake mix. We learned what ingredients and equipment are needed for pancakes. They were super yummy.
This week we have been celebrating Engineering Week 2019 in 6th class. We were very fortunate to have 5 engineers visit our classes over the last few days to talk to us about their areas of expertise.
Our visitors included 2 Biomedical Engineers, an Environmental engineer, a Sound engineer and an Energy engineer. We learned SO much from each of them and we can definitely say that this week has heightened both our awareness, along with our interest in the world of engineering. It certainly is a career path that is now on many of our minds! We would like to say a special thanks to all the brilliant engineers who gave up their valuable time in order to visit us. Huge thanks also to Mr. Cunningham who organised all of this weeks exciting activities! We carried out floating and sinking experiments using plasticine, a bowl of water, a banana, an orange, paper clips, unifix cubes and buttons. We tested out the items at different stages, made predictions as to whether the items would float or sink and recorded our results. |
