The children from 5th Class had great fun exploring the local area today. Firstly, we collected data for a local traffic survey. We filled in a tally chart to count how many of each type of vehicle passed by the school in 2 minutes. We will represent the data on a bar chart on Monday but it seems as though cars and vans are the vehicles that pass our school most frequently. We then proceeded to Dangan where we had a look at the plants and animals in different layers of the woodland. In pairs, we chose a tree and examined its leaf pattern. We also carried out a pitfall trap investigation in the leaf litter layer. We planted a jar in the ground and came back a half an hour later to see what insects had fallen in. We then listened to the interesting history of Menlo Castle and of the Tea House Folly in Dangan. We enjoyed our trip and are lucky to have such an interesting amenity on our doorstep.
