As part of the National 1916 Centenary Programme, The Irish Defence Forces have implemented a "Flags to Schools" initiative where each Primary School in Ireland is presented with the National Flag and a copy of The Proclamation. Today (Friday 8th January 2016), we had a short ceremony for our official presentation. We were visited by three members of the Defence Forces - Lieutenant Ruairí Millane, Corporal Desmond Padden and Private Brendan Connaughton.
The Presentation Ceremony was attended by all classes. While two of our 6th Class pupils (Hannah & Conal) welcomed the members of the Defence Forces at the Front Gate of the School, our Traditional Music group treated us to a short session. Hannah & Conal then accompanied them to the school hall where they were welcomed by Mr Carney & Ms NicCumhaill.
Lieutenant Ruairí Millane then gave us an outline of the history of the Irish Flag and the correct protocol to be observed in relation to our National Flag. He also gave us some brief background information on the Proclamation.
Next, six of our 6th Class pupils (Roisín, Conor, Daniel, Alexander, Odhrán and Michael) each read a paragraph of the Proclamation. After this, two school representatives - David from Junior Infants and Órlaith from 6th Class - were presented with the Flag and the Proclamation.
Following a short Question & Answer session, the ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and another short session from our Trad Group.
We were very pleased to be a part of the 1916 Flags to Schools initiative and we look forward to hoisting the flag with the rest of the schools in Ireland on the 15th March which is National Proclamation Day.
